Mobcap Exceeded

Far more mobs are spawning than intended, crowding chunks and hurting performance. Spawn settings are too high, or farms/mods are pushing mob counts past sensible limits.

What does this error mean?
The mob cap limits how many mobs spawn naturally. When it is set too high, or bypassed by farms and mods, the world fills with mobs, raising entity and AI load and dragging down TPS.
Too many mobs spawning
Most Common Causes
  • Mob-spawn caps set too high in config.
  • Mob farms producing mobs faster than they are removed.
  • Mods adding extra spawns.
  • High simulation distance loading more spawnable area.
  • Spawn settings not tuned for the hardware.
How To Diagnose
  1. Count mobs per type/chunk with spark or a plugin.
  2. Review spawn-count and mob-cap settings.
  3. Check farms for runaway production.
  4. Note simulation distance.
Recommended Fixes
  • Lower the mob caps
Reduce spawn limits in server.properties or Paper config to fit your hardware.
  • Throttle farms
Add kill/collection systems so farm mobs do not accumulate.
  • Reduce simulation distance
A smaller simulation distance loads fewer spawnable chunks.
  • Tune per-type spawns
On Paper, adjust spawn counts per category for finer control.
Frequently Asked Questions

A limit on how many mobs of each category spawn naturally in loaded chunks.

Farm mobs add to entity load and can keep the cap saturated, reducing natural spawns elsewhere.

Slightly fewer natural mobs, but much better TPS, usually a good trade on busy servers.
